From start to finish, my experience at Fat Dragon in Richmond was unforgettable. If you’re searching for authentic Chinese cuisine with a modern twist, this spot should be at the top of your list. From the ambiance to the service and the food, everything was *chef kiss* amazing.
Trendy, Intimate Vibes
The space is smaller than I expected, but it works. The size adds to the charm, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere. I would love to see it in a larger space. The inside isn’t anything over the top. There is a bar to the left with a couple high top tables. On the right, there are wooden tables and chairs that are not that far a part from each other. There are two server podiums, with one of them at the back and one at the front door to welcome you to your seat. The bar is first come, first serve.
Fat Dragon has a trendy bar vibe with an edge, making it ideal for a casual date night, happy hour, or a casual night out with a few friends. Whether you sit at a table or grab a bar seat, the energy is inviting. The bar offers interaction and excitement, letting you watch bartenders mix your drink. I usually sit at the bar and all of the bartenders have been friendly and delivered great service. I loved getting to know the staff and found that they all have unique and interesting stories. It’s easy to become a regular there, though so be careful 🙂
Tables give you a quieter, more private dining experience. Well… as private as you can be given the space is so small. Close tables mean you get to know your neighbors, right? Either way, you’re in for an amazing and memorable evening.
Dumplings That Steal the Show
To start, I ordered dumplings and they were both incredible. These dumplings are hands down some of the best I’ve ever had. They have just the right amount of spice, making every bite tasty. The texture was perfect: tender, juicy, and cooked just right. The sauce was the perfect addition with truly a one of a kind taste.
The flavors and presentation really set Fat Dragon apart from typical Chinese dining.
Pepper Steak Like You’ve Never Had
Next, I tried the pepper steak, which I normally wouldn’t order. Thanks to a staff recommendation, I gave it a try — and wow. This is nothing like standard takeout pepper steak.
The tender filet mignon pieces were cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The seasoning and sauce elevated the dish without overpowering the beef. It was spicy but it isn’t the too spicy to eat kind of spicy. The spice compliments and elevates the meal. I had fried rice which I found to be perfectly fluffy and delicious. It wasn’t the typical, greasy rice that you might get from your corner Chinese take out, but rather clean and flavorful.
The meal was a delightful surprise, proving that even classic dishes can reach a whole new level.
Espresso Martini Perfection
I started the evening with a cocktail. Of course, I had to try an espresso martini, my go-to drink. I was nervous ordering an Espresso in a Chinese bar downtown but I gave them the benefit of doubt. To my surprise, I was glad I did because the drink was perfectly crafted. The presentation itself was flawless: martini glass, 3 espresso beans, perfect coffee color. Smooth, bold, and perfectly balanced, it was happiness in a cup. It was just the right amount of strong while leaving room for flavor.

All in all, Fat Dragon has earned a spot on my favorites list. From the elevated Asian cuisine to the trendy, welcoming atmosphere, this restaurant is a must-visit for Richmond locals and visitors. I would even recommend this restaurant for tourists.
